At the center of the enchanting rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His existence was mostly untarnished, simple, and honest. His main role was mainly to care for his herd of rams.

Their low murmuring and the rustling of the wind through the solo tree on the mountaintop were his only companions. Day in day, watching over his charges instilled in him a notion of tranquil contentment.

Yet, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for company. During one such occasion because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plan.

Stories of wild beasts hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy chose to leveraged this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.

One afternoon he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills for rescue but saw no beast.

The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This prank persisted for a few days more. Yet, one morning, a real wolf actually come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, here is hard to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
